THE EVOLUTION of ME

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever drink anything GREEN. I like the color GREEN; I like the flavor of GREEN things, i.e. apples, lime sherbet, lettuce, kiwis, asparagus; and I like the smell of GREEN things, i.e. a freshly mowed lawn, green onions, a field of alfalfa. But to drink something GREEN was not ever going to be in my future. Just the look of it didn’t seem right. And so when the first “healthy” drinks came out that were made with a combination of ingredients and once blended ended up GREEN, I wholeheartedly rejected the idea.

My first encounter with a GREEN drink was on an early photo shoot for Stock Photography and I refused to taste it, let alone drink a portion of the contents.

Well, the day has come and I have had my first GREEN drink and I am sure I will be having them more often. And I have to say, I did enjoy it.

How did this EVOLUTION of mind and diet come about and perhaps more importantly why? Perhaps the answer is that I am older and wiser. For people who have been drinking GREEN healthy drinks, this probably seems like a no brainer.

With all the talk about eating healthier, it really came down to the fact that it was difficult for me to eat many servings of healthy GREEN vegetables each day. So in my quest to change my ways, I decided to wake up to GREEN. So here is my latest Healthy Smoothie recipe:

5 ice cubes

1/2 c. fresh pineapple pieces

1/2 c. banana

1/2 c. non-fat plain yogurt

1/2 c. 1% milk

a handful of green (baby kale)

Blend all together.

Of course you can use other fruits and you can use spinach or kale or a blend of these two. The point is to make it all fresh.

And there it is, my old smoothie has gone GREEN. So try your own concoction and enjoy a great way to start the day.

Next time you make a wrap of burrito, grab some of the biggest collard green leaves you can find.

First, trim the hard stems off the bottoms, and then blanch them in boiling water for one minute. Remove the leaves from the boiling water and dry them off. You’ve now got the most nutrient-dense tortilla on the planet. ENJOY!

MORE GREEN TIPS

by Coach, Jeff Taraday

There’s no disputing that leafy green vegetables are the healthiest foods on the planet. The more you eat, the leaner and healthier you’ll be. Since they’re so nutrient-dense, full of fiber, and low in calories (around 100 calories per pound), you can consume them in virtually unlimited amounts.

If you’re making a big egg or tofu scramble, add in some chopped spinach, kale, or collards towards the end of the cooking process. You’ll be starting your day with a nice portion of greens, with plenty of fiber and protein to keep you full for a long time.

WOMEN and MONEY

A UNIQUE RELATIONSHIP

Women and men don't have the same relationship with money.

For one thing, women are likely to have less of it. While the wage gap between men and women is getting smaller, women still earn about $11,500 less in a year.

As a result, women save less and are hesitant to take risk when it comes to investing the money they do save.

How do we improve our Relationship with Money?

Here are a few important Money & Me Tips!

1. Get comfortable talking about your money

It's good for women to talk with other women about finances. So find friends with whom you feel comfortable discussing finances.

Think of these get togethers as investment-themed tupperware parties. The focus should be on building an environment where you feel comfortable asking those questions and where you don't feel intimidated.

Whether you are talking to your friends or to a financial advisor, you need to feel comfortable enough to ask questions.

The gender of your financial advisor should not matter. What matters is if you feel comfortable talking with her or him.

Remember, no question about investing is too basic or too stupid. Asking questions is a great way to learn.

3. A little risk wouldn't hurt

Women tend to be more risk-averse, which can be both a good and bad thing.

We're less likely to be tempted into getting involved in "get rich quick" schemes, and more likely to ask a lot of questions. On the other hand, that risk aversion can work against us when we're taking sensible risks. Investing can always feel risky, but it doesn't have to be as risky as it might feel.

Hopefully, the more comfortable you are talking about your money and asking questions, the more comfortable you will be taking calculated risks.

4. Know what to ask a financial adviser

Are you a "fee-only" advisor? Fee-only advisors are only paid by their clients, so they minimize conflicts of interest. What is your investment philosophy? Don't be afraid to Ask!

2. Prioritize your investments

While starting to save for your retirement is important, there are a few things that should come first.

It's important to have an emergency fund saved; and if not, it is never to late to start. Then, think about what you are planning to spend money on in the next several years. Once you have your emergency fund and money for near term needs set aside, then you can consider money for long term investing.

Keep in mind that smart management of your money requires you to be an active participant. After all, your priorities will change over time.
